A grassroots movement for economic democracy based on cooperatives and local economies is quickly growing throughout the planet. After Capitalism, inspired by P.R. Filled with successful examples from six continents as well as many resources, activities and tools for activists, After Capitalism will fill you with hope and the conviction that a new, democratic economy is indeed possible.Includes a conversation with Noam Chomsky and contributions by Frei Betto, Johan Galtung, Leonardo Boff, Sohail Inayatullah, Marcos Arruda, Ravi Batra and others.“An ambitious and stimulating attempt to connect spiritual principles with the pragmatic work of building a better world.” — Gar Alperovitz,

author of Sacred Economics“With grace and intelligence, Dada Maheshvarananda illuminates paths of personal enlightenment and global transformation. In an epoch when global capitalism ravages our planet and destroys communities, his perspective is a refreshing account of cooperative forms of life that provide alternatives to a world of greed and injustice.” — George Katsiaficas,

After Capitalism Economic Democracy in Action eBook Dada Maheshvarananda

From an experienced worldview Dada Maheshvaranda takes on describing the complex idea of Prout as it applies to economic, ecological, cultural, communal, and spiritual topics. He clearly describes the flaws of capitalism and how ideas such as decentralized economics and worker cooperatives can build a better economy for all. He calls this economic democracy.
He explores the radical idea of combining spirituality into mainstream culture. From my American perspective this idea was hard to grapple with at times, but I believe this idea has the opportunity to create a more just society.
I recommend this book to everyone and especially those who wish for an alternative to the consumerism, greed, and dehumanization that capitalism incurs.

After Capitalism Economic Democracy in Action eBook Dada Maheshvarananda Reviews

This is a thorough, accurate, and readable introduction to the economic and social framework known as the Progressive Utilization Theory or PROUT. Just in time.
In the wake of financial crisis and depression in the U.S. and Europe it is hard to argue that capitalism is working well. At the same time, memories linger of the oppressive past of the communist countries. It is not only the Occupy Wall Street demonstrators who are concluding that there must be a better alternative. People seeking systemic change from varied conceptual frameworks are developing new ideas; they seem to be converging toward economic democracy as the alternative most likely to secure economic prosperity and security, as well as safeguard human freedom and dignity. It seems just the right time to present the ideas of that pioneer of the theory of economic democracy, the late P.R. Sarkar.
Author Dada Maheshvarananda faithfully presents PROUT as its founder developed it, while at the same time demonstrates its relevance to contemporary problems. These practical applications give the work a sense of urgency and inspire hope We find there is a better way.
In After Capitalism Economic Democracy in Action Dada Maheshvarananda makes a compelling case for the emergence of an alternative to the devil's brew of monopoly capitalism and political "democracy" that has culminated in "Citizens United."

Maheshvarananda illustrates the terrible injustice and suffering caused by capitalism and explains carefully how Prout's Economic Democracy can lead to a far better world.

After Capitalism is essential reading for those wishing to learn about Sarkar's philosophy and how it applies in the modern world, and for those interested in working to bring about true social change. In other words, everyone should read this book.
I congratulate my good friend, Dada Maheshvarananda, on laying out in layman's terms this inspiring description of a viable future for humanity. This is the most lucid exposition yet on the extraordinary societal vision of P.R. Sarkar and his Progressive Utilization Theory. A must read if you are looking for an alternative to both materialistic socialism and capitalism. I recommend this book to all my students.
American capitalism collapsed into a financial crisis in 2008 (The Great Financial Crisis Causes and Consequences). It remains stuck (The Endless Crisis How Monopoly-Finance Capital Produces Stagnation and Upheaval from the USA to China), unemployment remains at 8 percent, underemployment at 17 percent, generating cries of injustice (Unjust Deserts How the Rich Are Taking Our Common Inheritance) and a call for protest (Occupy the Economy Challenging Capitalism (City Lights Open Media)). Inequality in the United States is at levels that put in peril our economy, our democracy, and our very system of justice (The Price of Inequality How Today's Divided Society Endangers Our Future).

People are questioning whether there is any alternative to low-paying jobs, lack of benefits, and the lack of economic security. People are beginning to question why there is (some degree) of democracy in the political realm, but once in the economic realm democracy is abandoned and totalitarianism runs supreme. To many people the contrast of political democracy and economic totalitarianism is a serious contradiction (Corporate Dreams Big Business in American Democracy from the Great Depression to the Great Recession), that diminishes happiness and quality of life and threaten the sustainability of the country.

This book is the second edition with six new essays and updated statistics and developments. The book was originally written in 2003, the financial collapse of 2008 and continued socio-economic stagnation has made this book urgently relevant and important.

In this book it is argued there is a viable alterative to the boom and bust cycle of capitalism. The alternative is PROgressive Utilization Theory, or PROUT economics.

The economic principles of PROUT begins with idea that (1) all citizens deserve the minimum requirements of life of food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and education; (2) employment is guaranteed; (3) promotes the progressive use of science and technology and a federal institution geared toward research and development; (4) the federal political system must include decentralized planning at the level of the local economy with balanced development of what is needed by local citizens; (5) the creation of a three tier economic system that supports (a) privately-owned small businesses, (b) cooperatively-owned medium and large businesses, and (c) government-run large industries; (6) to the degree to which it is possible "decentralized self-sufficient" local economies will be created (e.g. city/region/area); (7) crucial to PROUT is the cooperatively-owned businesses.

Cooperatively-owned businesses means that businesses must be locally owned and locally run enterprises.

These are meant to transform and democratize the workplace. In the United States 1 in 4 American workers are employed in low-wage work, with no benefits, no health-care, no retirement, no paid sick days or family leave. 1 in 2 American workers make less than $25,000 per year. Income and wealth becomes highly concentrated in capitalism. Most investments in contemporary capitalism are highly speculative and short-term (rather than productive and long-term). Debt is ubiquitous in the U.S. economy. There is a tendency to either ignore and/or exploit the natural environment. And 80 percent of all start-up private business fails in the U.S. economy within three years. The U.S. government is $16 Trillion dollars in debt, borrowing $3.8 billion per day to pay federal bills. U.S. households are on average $16,000 in debt (excluding school and mortgage debt).

Cooperatively-owned local businesses are meant to replace the above socio-economic pathologies, and would be the largest part of a Proutian economy.

Globally co-ops provide more than 100 million jobs, 20 percent more than multinational corporations. Thus they are already the predominant global form of enterprise. 90 percent of all co-ops are still in business after 5 years. Wages and salaries are determined in a collective democratic process.

Maheshvarananda provides us with the best available introduction to Proutian economics. In addition to mending the social pathologies of capitalism Maheshvarananda explains how
Proutianism promotes leisure, spirituality (meta-Reality The Philosophy of meta-Reality, Volume 1 Volume 1 Creativity, Love and Freedom (Theory, Culture & Society)), and a new humanistic ethic (Dialectic The Pulse of Freedom (Classical Texts in Critical Realism)).

Gar Alperovitz (America Beyond Capitalism Reclaiming Our Wealth, Our Liberty, and Our Democracy) expresses on the back cover, this book is "An ambitious and stimulating attempt to connect spiritual principles with the pragmatic work of building better world." The book is also consistent with movement for "workers' self-directed enterprises" (WSDE) underway in the United States (Democracy at Work A Cure for Capitalism).

Very pratical _and_ spiritual read.
Love this new perspective to our saturated capitalist system.
